Starting a project - design by press release
I don't remember where I first heard it, but "design by press release" (or "design by readme" if it's an internal project) is a fantastic idea.
You see, when you're busy building something, it's easy to get caught up in the bits and pieces and then lose your way. While you're deep in the code, it's easy to think "while I'm here I'll just add this in" or "this will be useful later". And suddenly, you've wasted a load of time on something that was never part of the original plan.
(Incidentally, this is one of the reasons I like "test-first" development - it gives you a boundary on what you need to implement).
When you're building a project, one that's supposed to be commercially viable, your vision for the product - who it's for, why they will want it and what makes it stand apart - is vital. So, for my new side-project (I'm not giving up the [day job](https://www.collabor8online.co.uk)), I'm going to publish the press release here and now.
I've never written a press release before so I'm not sure how good it is but it does contain almost everything I want to say - apart from one thing; my plan is to give the "associates" a 49% vote over the direction of the company. Because for this product to work, it has to help those associates look amazing in front of their clients - and they know better than me what will help there.
