Snapchat vs Instagram vs Whatsapp vs Facebook vs Twitter vs Whatever

I joined Twitter and Facebook back in 2007.

I used to love Twitter, in particular. A place to talk to strangers on the other side of the world.

But lately, I’ve not been touching either. I gave up on Twitter quite a while ago, Facebook quite recently. Instagram has never been a big deal for me, so cutting that out was easy.

I don’t have any superior reasons for this. I just noticed that Facebook and Twitter in particular, and Instagram to a lesser extent, were annoying me. And because of a particular choice that they have made.

In the olden days, twitter used to be chronological. The newest stuff at the top. If you didn’t log in for a couple of days, you’d have to scroll and scroll and scroll to see if there was anything important you had missed.

That’s no longer the case for Twitter. It was never the case for Facebook. They also changed Instagram in the same way. Now the stuff that they think is important, that you should see, gets “surfaced” and pushed to the top.

And it’s destroyed those networks for me. It’s basically filled them with noise. I don’t care if lots of other people think it’s interesting. It’s not what I want to see.

So now, I stick to Snapchat and WhatsApp. They’ve not screwed those up. Yet.
