Mindset

I think the biggest change in myself over the last few weeks or months has been on of mindset.

We’re all pretty aware that our minds are split into conscious and subconscious. And the conscious is something we have a bit of control over, while the subconscious is a bit deeper.

Often, we try to do stuff and, without realising it, we sabotage ourselves. Procrastination is a prime example. We know we’ve got a load of stuff to get done, but we just can’t get round to it. This is our subconscious in action - for whatever reason, it’s decided that it doesn’t want the goal at the end of the task, even though our conscious mind really does want it.

Luckily, there is a way round this. It’s a bit hippyish, but we need to reprogram our subconscious so it doesn’t stand in our way. And the best way to do that is to figure out what it’s trying to say to us and restate it in a different way.

So if you don’t want to write that proposal because you’re worried that winning the contract will mean you’re too busy and you won’t be able to cope - reframe it. Winning the contract will mean you’ll be able to afford to hire an assistant who will take some of the pressure off. And then say it out loud. Every day. For a few weeks.

Your subconscious may be powerful but it’s not that bright. Repeat your preferred version over and over again and it will soon get the message.

Take Action:. Do something scary. Your subconscious is trying to protect you, so there’s no better way to make your subconscious rear its head than to do something scary. You will feel it and you can then decide if it’s being a barrier to your progress or actually helping you.
